Fees and payments for importing food of animal origin

If you import food of animal origin, you are required to pay a border control fee. This page contains information on how the fee is calculated and how to pay.

Fees for border controls and sampling

The base fee for border control of a consignment containing food of animal origin is SEK 1,150 + SEK 0.18 per kg. The fee is higher if the controls must be performed outside of regular office hours.

  • For consignments covered by Article 47(1)(b) of Regulation (EU) 2017/625, a base fee of SEK 1,150 is charged. A fee per kilo of goods in a consignment is added to the base fee. This fee is SEK 0.18 per kilogram, except for consignments destined for free zones, free warehouses, customs warehouses or maritime trade.
  • For consignments covered by Article 47(1)(d) to (f) of Regulation (EU) 2017/625, a base fee of SEK 1,150 is charged. For consignments subject only to documentary checks without physical presentation, the base fee is SEK 750 per consignment.
  • For consignments subject to specific controls under Articles 65–67 of Regulation (EU) 2017/625, a fee of SEK 800 per hour is charged.

Cost of sampling

Sometimes sampling needs to take place at border control This may be because border control suspects irregularities or because of what is known as a safeguard measure. The cost of sampling is paid by the importer and is charged on the same invoice as the cost of border control.

Border controls include an annual sampling programme where random samples are taken for drug residues, bacteria, etc. The cost of this sampling is included in the base fee.

Lower fees for consignments from New Zealand

Border controls of food of animal origin from New Zealand are subject to a lower fee than other Swedish border controls. Cost of control of consignments:

  • consignments up to 6 tonnes: EUR 42
  • consignments between 7 and 46 tonnes: EUR 7/tonne
  • consignments over 46 tonnes: EUR 325

The conversion from euros (EUR) to Swedish kronor (SEK) is done using an exchange rate that is corrected once a month based on the current exchange rate.

The level of fees in the trade agreement is based on a decision to reduce the frequency of physical checks on imports of animal products into the EU from New Zealand. The reduction is based on Annex 8, Part B of a trade agreement in place between the EU and New Zealand.

Payment procedures

The border control fee is invoiced to the company's paying agent retrospectively. The paying agent is the person who pre-notifies a consignment for border control, i.e. the operator responsible for the consignment. The payment term is 30 days.
