Here is information on the free trade agreement between the European Commission and Canada.

Trade agreement with Canada

Agreement between the EU and Canada on sanitary and phytosanitary measures to protect public and animal health in respect of trade in live animals and animal products was reached in 1999 through Council Decision 1999/201. The agreement reduced the frequency of physical checks of products of animal origin imported from Canada. The required frequency is stated in Annex VIII to the decision, which was amended by Commission Decision 2005/306/EC.

Since 21 September 2017, the provisions of the agreement have been incorporated into the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the EU and Canada. Import checks and fees are covered in Article 5.10 of Chapter 5 of CETA, while the frequency for import checks is established in Annex 5-J to the agreement.

The following conditions apply to the import of products of animal origin from Canada

Frequency of physical checks

  • 10 % for all products of animal origin, except for live bivalve molluscs (shellfish) which have a frequency of 15 %.
  • 15 % for fishery products, including fishery products in hermetically sealed containers intended to render them stable at ambient temperatures, fresh and frozen fish, dry fishery products, salted fishery products, or dry and salted fishery products.
  • 2 % for live crustaceans and fresh degutted fish, headless and with no other manual processing.
